For Immediate Release: Major Tax Automated System Upgrade for DRT; Tax Refunds Expected by Mid-June

Press Release | May 13, 2025

(Saipan, MP) - The Division of Revenue and Taxation is undergoing a major transition of its outdated tax system to a modern automated system—an investment designed to enhance efficiency, transparency, and accuracy in operations.

This marks the most significant upgrade to the CNMI’s tax processing infrastructure since 1999. Once fully implemented, the new system will streamline tax filing, reduce processing times, minimize errors, and improve overall customer service in the future.

As the transition progresses, DRT currently expects to issue refunds by mid-June, ensuring that all critical development components are functioning properly and accurately. DRT staff are currently processing tax returns while ensuring compliance with safeguards to support the secure rollout of refunds.

“We are committed to providing taxpayers with a modern, reliable, and efficient tax administration experience,” said Tracy Norita, Secretary of Finance. “We want to issue refunds as soon as possible and this short-term delay is necessary to ensure that our systems are properly integrated and secure so we can better serve the CNMI moving forward. We understand the importance of timely refunds and appreciate the public’s patience as we take this step toward a stronger, more efficient government.”
